LRFF Programmer Amman Abbasi’s First Report from Cannes

Cannes has been overwhelming so far (in a good way).  My mom is my travel partner on this trip and it has been really fun to experience the festival with her.  I went to the short film competition and I can say that I enjoyed each and everyone of them.  From the shorts, my favorites would have to be the Australian film, Bear directed by Nash Edgerton, and the South Korean film, Ghost.

Every night there is a red carpet event accompanied with a film premiere.  So far, Restless by Gus Van Sant and Sleeping Bueaty, the debut film by the Australian director Julia Leigh have premiered. I got to watch both of these.  As Restless, missed the mark for me, Sleeping Beauty nailed it.  Sleeping Beauty was a truely original work.  The music with it was numbing, thanks to the great Ben Frost (composer of the film). It’s up for the Palme d’Or.  Anyways, I will continue to attend conferences and watch movies, as well as screen L7!  Now I am off to a Drag Queen party! More to Come!
